Every year the Lee County Humane Society takes in over 5,000 cats and dogs. We believe in taking a community approach in rehoming animals. LCHS manages a growing foster care program great for animal lovers who aren’t looking to adopt but want to make a difference in the lives the animals at the shelter.

Our residents need foster families for a variety of reasons:

  • Rescue and Relocation: animals that have been accepted by a rescue organization and need a place to stay until their transport date
  • Animals that are too young to be adopted.
  • Special needs animals that need a little extra time and care before adoption
  • Any animal waiting for their forever home

How to become an LCHS foster home

fosterFoster parents must be at least 19 years old and have the extra time to commit to an additional dog or cat in their household. Foster families provide their guest with food, water, shelter, basic obedience and a safe, loving environment. You may also be required to provide transportation to and from the shelter, offsite adoption events, and veterinary appointments.

Interested? Complete our LCHS foster program application. Our foster coordinator will review your application and add your information to the foster database. We will keep you informed of dogs and cats in need with regular foster care email updates or direct contact by the LCHS staff.

Become an Adoption Ambassador

Take fostering to the next level by becoming an Adoption Ambassador. Thanks to a grant from the ASPCA, we can now adopt out animals without having them or potential adopters having to enter the shelter! Through this program, LCHS fosters can foster eligible dogs and cats until they are adopted. This means that you’ll be directly involved in the adoption process of your foster pet! As an Adoption Ambassador, you’ll receive a free Adoption Ambassador t-shirt and your foster pet will be sent with an Adopt Me vest to wear around town and an adoption packet. All pets adopted through this program are sponsored, so all dogs are only $25 to adopt and cats are only $15. To participate, fill out the foster application and email

*We encourage our foster families to only foster pets that will be a good fit for their lifestyle.
